Promote Good Health and Camaraderie

Category News

To promote good health and camaraderie there is a BIG 5 Mountain bike race organisation that has organised 5 races per year in the KZN area. These events are headed by Shane Webster from Nashua.

The races are Mtunzini, Eshowe or Richards Bay, Monzi, Kwambonambi and Hluhluwe. Each race day offers a choice of 10, 25 or 50 km. Each category gets 3 prizes. The racers are timed and results are placed on the internet to enable each person to better themselves the next year.

The race started a couple of years ago with about 300 entries, whereby the last race held on the 21st September 2014 hosted over 800 entries. T

The Big 5 Mountain bike Series aims to encourage community participation in a healthy outdoor sporting activity that encourages family participation, community and business networking. Each event raises funds for a community or environmental project to positively impact on people's lives.

Community Outreach - By involving previously disadvantaged individuals they ensure participation in their events for those who would never have such an opportunity. Their development rider program as well as bicycle give away at each event means that the Big 5 inspires everyone involved in the event to see that they can effect positive change in their community by simply participating.

Family, family, family - More than anything family is the driving motivation behind the Big 5 series. Mountain biking is unique in its appeal to all ages and each event ensures that it places as much emphasis on catering for the leisure rider as it does for the competitive racer.

The Big Five Mountain Bike Series has come a long way since 2006. Cyclists compete for honours by racing the full series where their best four times count. Growth in all distances the 10km, 25km and 50km has been phenomenal with a 30% growth in the last year.

Rosemarie van der Merwe from our Acutts Richards Bay franchise participated in the Hluhluwe Bell Big 5 25km race and her Podium Result was as follows: Position – 1, Distance – 25km, Category – Grand Master (F) BIG5, with a finishing time of (01:56:54).

Well done Rose from all of us at the Acutts Family and thank you for your inspiration to effect a positive change in your community by participating in this event.
