Is it going to add value to my home?

I recently had the conversation with my wife as to whether it is time to sell our home and purchase a new home. Those of you who have had this conversation will agree that it is not the easiest of conversations to have as there are many factors to consider before the descision can be made. These include proximity to work and schools, as well as distance to travel to see friends and family.
We eventually decided that it is not yet the right time to move but what we might want to do is make some alterations to our existing home. Some of these in my opionion would add value, and some would purely be for comfort reasons.
Over the years I have seen many homes with many different ammendments and alterations, the only common thing between them is that all the homeowners thought that the alterations added value to their property. In some cases this was true but in others not.
The main difference between the two situations is that the homeowner who made alterations which added value to the home, took into consideration the tastes of potential future buyers into consideration.
So the question I suggest you ask yourself before making alterations to your home is "Is it going to add value to my home?"
